Building Better Opportunities (BBO)

ReachIT Lancashire Digital Inclusion Project

Building Better Opportunities is a national programme from The Big Lottery Fund who are matching funds from the European Social Fund (ESF) 2014-2020 to invest in local projects tackling the root causes of poverty, promoting social inclusion and driving local jobs and growth

A digital inclusion project aiming to ensure that no-one in Lancashire gets left behind by the shift towards the need for digital skills. By providing targeted, personalised digital skills training we aim to improve employability, health & well being, and provide the digital skills necessary to empower those in disadvantaged communities throughout Lancashire.

We’ll ensure that the most socially excluded throughout Lancashire can access ReachIT by channelling engagement & support resources through local communities and services.

ReachIT will contribute to Lancashire’s Employment & Skills priorities including: targeted support, linked to local business needs; developing independent advice/guidance; preparing people for work including employability training & support into work.

Participants will be equipped with improved digital skills leading to enhanced employability opportunities, better financial planning, reduced social isolation, as well as opening up access to online health services. The community will benefit from improved community cohesion (through reengagement of socially excluded people), as well as support for local businesses and the economy.

This is Your Life- Bringing Generations Together’ Heritage Lottery Fund- Community Enterprise & Skills

Community Enterprise & Skills CIC (CES CIC) has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting new project, ‘This is Your Life- Bringing Generations Together’ to be delivered in Blackburn.

The project will empower local young people to work with local older people creating impacting and lasting memories that can bridge gaps between generations promoting social inclusion and breaking down cultural barriers.

Made possible by funding from the National Lottery, the group will work with local youth group SLYNCS (Supporting Links Between Youth & Networks, Communities & Specialists)  to research local diverse cultural heritage of those first generations who migrated from South Asian Countries and make use of the collections held by Blackburn with Darwen Library & Information Service to support research.

Started in September 2017, a group of energetic and innovative young people have led the project, capturing memories from older people who migrated from the Asian sub-continent during the early 1960’s and 70’s. The accounts of these memories will then be digitised and made available via the Cotton Town website (www.cottontown.org) in order to create a lasting record which can be accessed worldwide.

The Heritage project will capture memories of people ‘Working in the Mills’ during times like the cotton industry boom and ‘food & recipes’ brought from their homelands to continue their cultural traditions.
